Where is Wheel Decontaminant used?

The product is formulated to act on iron contamination in the areas of the vehicle most prone to build-up. The more a surface is exposed to friction and environmental particles, the more the treatment makes a difference.

Painted rims: The area with the greatest build-up of brake dust. Periodic treatment with Wheel Decontaminant prevents the particles from oxidising and attacking the paint, keeping the rim shiny and intact.

Wheels: Complete treatment of the wheel area, including the less accessible spots where dirt compacts over time.

Bodywork: Iron particles produced by brakes and the environment also settle on the car’s paint. The decontaminant works by eliminating the invisible contamination that makes the surface rough to the touch and dulls the colour.

With every braking action, pads and discs wear down through friction, releasing a fine dust of iron particles into the air. These particles, hot and reactive, settle on rims, bodywork and glass, penetrating the paint and bonding deep down.

The problem is that they often cannot be seen. Or they appear only as a thin dark layer that ordinary washing will not shift. A standard detergent is not enough: iron contamination requires a specific chemical action, able to dissolve the particles at the root without attacking the surfaces.

If the car is often driven in cities, near railway or tram stations, or in industrial areas, iron contamination is even more intense. It is not cosmetic dirt: left over time, it corrodes the finish and reduces the rim’s original shine.

Brake dust: Every braking action creates iron particles that settle on rims and bodywork. They are not removed by ordinary washing and become encrusted in the paint over time.

Invisible contamination: Iron particles are often imperceptible to the naked eye, but they are present on all cars. You can recognise them by touch as a rough surface on the bodywork, or as dark specks that will not rinse away.

  1. Spray. Distribute the product evenly on the surface to be treated, covering the whole area. Apply to cold surfaces, away from direct sunlight.
  2. Let It Work. Wait for the product to react with the iron contamination. The change to purple is the visual confirmation that the formula is working. Do not let the product dry on the surface.
  3. Work with a Brush. For more persistent contamination or in hard-to-reach areas, work the surface with a soft-bristle brush. The mechanical action boosts the effectiveness of the chemical formula.
  4. Rinse. Remove the product with plenty of water. Rinsing completely removes the formula and the dissolved iron contamination, leaving the surface clean and ready for subsequent treatments.
  5. Check the Result. After rinsing, the surface is free of iron contamination. The rim is shiny again, the bodywork smooth to the touch. If necessary, repeat the treatment on the most heavily contaminated areas.

What is iron contamination and why does it form on rims?

Iron contamination is mainly caused by brake pads and discs which, through friction during braking, release microscopic iron particles into the air. These settle on rims, bodywork and glass, penetrating the paint. Those who live near railway or tram lines, or in industrial areas, are exposed to even more intense contamination. Iron particles are not removed by ordinary washing and require a specific chemical product.

Why does the product turn purple when I apply it?

The purple colour change is a chemical reaction: the chelating agents in the formula react with the iron in the contaminating particles, forming a water-soluble purple-red compound. It is the direct visual confirmation that Wheel Decontaminant is working. The more intense the reaction, the higher the level of iron contamination on the surface.

How often should an iron decontaminant be used on rims?

A treatment with iron decontaminant is recommended every 2-3 washes, or more frequently on cars that are often driven in cities, in high-traffic areas or near railway infrastructure. Brake dust is acidic: the longer it stays on the surface, the harder it becomes to remove and the greater the risk of it damaging the rim's finish.

Can it also be used on bodywork and glass?

Yes. Wheel Decontaminant is also suitable for bodywork and glass contaminated by iron particles. Apply panel by panel on the bodywork, leave to work and rinse thoroughly. The treatment is particularly useful before polishing or applying a coating, to ensure completely clean, contamination-free surfaces.

Why should it not be used on unpainted brake calipers?

Unpainted brake calipers are made of cast iron, an alloy containing iron. The decontaminant formula reacts with iron and could stain or deteriorate calipers not protected by paint. When applying to rims, take care not to spray directly onto unpainted calipers.

Does the iron decontaminant also remove visible rust?

Wheel Decontaminant is designed to dissolve iron contamination deposited on surfaces, including iron oxide stains (rail dust) on paint. Deep or structural rust stains require a specific assessment, as bodyshop work may be needed.

How long should the product be left to work?
